Background and aim: The present study is the effect of peer-assisted learning using conceptual maps and flashcards on the subject of classifying living organisms by student teachers of Farhangian University in virtual space. In terms of purpose.
method: it is applied and has a semi-experimental method and a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population was Farhangian University students and the statistical sample was determined to be 87 male students in the first semester of Biology Education at Shahid Beheshti Higher Education Center, Tehran in 2022. The students participated in the peer-assisted learning method in three classes for 16 weeks by simple randomization. The students were divided into one group (control) and two separate experimental groups (conceptual maps and flashcards). Before and after learning by the peer and conventional methods, an academic progress test and academic motivation based on the Hermans (1987) questionnaire was conducted. Data analysis was based on descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics of ANCOVA using SPSS version 24 software.
Findings: The findings indicate that peer learning had a significant impact on academic progress and the level of students' motivation compared to the conventional method in the virtual education environment(p<0.05).
Conclusion: The peer method as an educational strategy can provide deeper learning and optimal performance by creating structure and clarity in course concepts and promote learning from the stage of memorization and repetition to the stage of analysis, synthesis and creation of knowledge. Therefore, these tools are recommended to be included in curricula.
